New Zealand third in Governors Cup

by Nancy Mellon on 24 Jul 2006
The Govenor’s Cup orhanised by the Balboa YC was won for the first time in six years by a US crew. Balboa Yacht Club
Three down under teams were beaten by King Harbor Yacht Club, the only US team in the Semi-Finals, for the first US win in six years.

The teams from down under were Royal Perth, Royal New Zealand and Cruising Yacht Club of Australia who placed second, third, fourth, seventh and eighth.

The last time an American team won was in 1999 and 2000 - the winning skipper both years was Colin Campbell also from King Harbor Yacht Club.

The 2006 Balboa Yacht Club Governor's Cup International Regatta for Juniors was held from July 17th through July 22 in ideal conditions with winds from 8 to 16 knots in the ocean off Newport Beach. Sailed in Gov Cup 21's designed by BYC member Alan Andrews specifically for this event, the boats held up well. Planned for the usual light air conditions, they proved to handle the heavier seas and winds easily.

The teams participated in a round robin of match racing, won handily with no losses by the defending champions, Royal Prince Alfred. However, in the second round robin, they lost to Balboa Yacht Club and Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, putting them in the fleet race for the eight teams that did not make the finals. The teams from down under are used to match racing while most of the US teams typically race in fleets. Southern Yacht Club won the fleet race with a first, second and third finish. RPAYC came in third overall in those three races behind Balboa Yacht Club. The fleet race was a new addition to the Gov Cup experience, to give the racers a challenge on the last day while the top four teams competed in the semi-final and final match races.
