It's now Grundig Xena as crew waits on weather
by Rob Mundle on 1 Jun 2001
It’s been a wait that has been worthwhile for Sean Langman and his crew of what is now a yacht named ‘Grundig Xena’.
While they have anxiously awaited the development of a suitable weather pattern for their assault on the world 24-hour record run for a monohull Langman has
managed to secure sponsorship support from the prominent European consumer electronics brand, Grundig.
The deal, finalised today, will see the yacht renamed ‘Grundig Xena’. Grundig has previously supported the yacht in a number of its campaigns, including the Sydney
to Hobart race.
'We are very happy to be re-establishing our association with the yacht,' said Grundig’s Director – Sales and Marketing in Australia, Brian Rodgers, today. 'The
previous Xena campaigns that Grundig has backed have been very successful for our re-emerging brand in Australia. We are confident that Grundig Xena will carry
our name to a world record this time.'
Langman said that Grundig’s support for his yacht would further enhance their potential for setting a new world mark. The target is 467.7 miles in 24 hours.
Langman is confident that given ideal conditions the highly developed Open 60 Grundig Xena can top 500 miles.
Roger ‘Clouds’ Badham, who is acting as meteorologist for the world record attempt, advised today that it would probably be at least a week before a suitable
weather pattern developed off Australia’s east coast.
