Anchorage Ay Ioannou (Nouassa) SW
It’s real name is Ormus Ay Ioannou, but it’s hard to find even Naoussa on a map, and we have never found how to pronounce the anchorage’s name, as the locals look blank and say THEY call it Monastiri, presumably after an old monastery on a nearby cliff.
It’s a wide shallow sandy anchorage, such as cruising sailors dream of. Very protected, yet just a short sail from the ocean. Surrounded by high rocky cliffs, crowned with a whitewashed chapel, it also has a population of mountain goats which leap and cavort across impossible crevasses.
Like Kas in Turkey, or Store Beach in Australia’s Sydney, it is across the bay from Naoussa, reached by romantic caique journey - thanks to the small swimming beach that is frequented by holidaymakers.
And once across to Naoussa, one finds the magic of a Greek Island fishing village that has been lost in the more famous islands – the smells of fresh fish drying in the sun, warming whiffs from the bakery, coffee percolating.
The noises are homely - the calls of the fishermen, shouts of the small boys playing. Holidaymakers here are mostly Greek, and the old men still come down to their favourite haunt for morning coffee and a chat. Charisma there is plenty, but perfection is lacking – and isn’t that the secret of all great beauty?
But let the pictures tell a more articulate story……
