Richard Paul Russell Limited have installed wind measuring equipment on Hurst Castle, at the western end of the Solent. The data is available on the internet at http://www.weatherfile.com/~hurst
This data allows the sailors and event organizers at Cowes Week to see what's happening to the wind at the western end of the Solent, in particular the onset of the western sea breeze. This will enable competitors to make important tactical choices and help organizers with decisions regarding courses.
A keen sailor, Richard Russell comments:
'this information will be of great interest to all those who sail in the Solent, whether racing during Cowes Week or just cruising.'
The wind at Hurst Castle is measured using the latest ultrasonic technology.
Ideally suited to the marine environment, the sensor has no moving parts and
provides reliable and accurate wind speed and direction data.
