Kiwis compete in UK 29er Nationals at Hayling

by Ovington and Sail-World on 19 Jul 2006
Chelsea Whitburn and Matt Bankcroft training in their 29er on Otago Harbour before leaving for UK. They are sailing a new boat in the UK Nationals and Worlds. Event Media
Monday brought one of the hottest days of the year and with it a light NE breeze which was soon cancelled by a weak southerly sea breeze. The race teams managed to get two races in for both fleets.

With the huge 29er fleet split into two flights the yellow fleet got away first and is now headed up by Silja Lehitenen & Scott Babbage from Finland, Current European girl champions Hannah Diamond & Olivia Pettit are lying 2nd with Francis Peters & Kate Sparks in third.

The first day of GBR 29er Nationals held at Hayling Island Sailing Club, the average breeze was about 3 knots. The New Zealand crew of Chelsea Whitburn and Matt Bankcroft were placed 29th and 18th, and are 21st in Blue fleet overall.

Chelsea Whitburn reports: 'There is 85 boats split into two fleets in 29er. Its described as a 'heat wave' here its the hottest since 1976.

'The 29er class over here is growing fast, and I was talking to the World 29er President yesterday and he said that it was 90% sure that the 29er will be the Youth World class for Brazil, making it the Youth class for the next three years. What an exciting boat for the Youth Worlds!'

The 29er Worlds start at Weymouth next week.
