Good places in Ynglings may be too late for Kiwis

by Sail-World/GJN on 8 Jul 2006 With one day to go at the Yngling World Championship, the Kiwi crew led by Sharon Ferris have emerged with 4th and 5th placings, their best performances in the regatta.

However in the overall standings it has only lifted them one place overall to 13th in the 37 strong fleet.

There is a new leader in the women's event. Ulrike Schuemann, Runa Kappen and Ute Hoeptner of Germany moved from third to first place after nine races completed.

Tied for second place are Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Victoria Rawlinson of Briton and Spain's Monica and Sandra Azon and Graciela Pisonero. The two teams are five points off the leaders.

The reigning world champions, Sally Barkow, Carrie Howe and Debbie Capozzi of the United States, are in fourth overall a futher six points back.

The German and the US teams won races today (Friday) and the Brits had a second but the US, along with the Brits, were down the fleet in the other two races. This allowed the German and Spanish, who each had two good results, to move up the overall rankings.

Racing finishes Saturday with a maximum of two races.
