Liverpool YC Summer & Evening Series results

by Richard Baldwin on 8 Jul 2006
On Sunday July 2 Liverpool Yacht club held the first of their summer series. Because of the Wallasey Offshore race to Puffin Island Anglesey, the day before many of the regular yachts were unavailable with a result that only five boats took part.

A fairly long course was set in light winds but all yachts finished with the exception of Jeanette Wight’s Hocus Pocus that made a navigational error. Despite taking a handicap penalty to race in class 2 Andy Napper’s Dirich took class 2 and Andy Freeney had a walk over in class 3.

Summer Series 1 result:

Class 2 IRC (TCF 0.871 – 0.935)
1st Andy Napper’s GK24 Dirich
2nd Paul Fairfield’s Formula 28 Billy Whizz
3rd Richard Mann’s Toledo II Defiance

Class 3 IRC (TCF < 0.871)

Liverpool Yacht club held the second race of their evening series on Thursday 6 July. Jim Connolly and Bob Nightingale of race control set a greatly appreciated eleven-leg course of almost 10 miles using both sides of the river Mersey in a force 3 increasing up to a Force 5 Westerly.

Eleven yachts took part in the race with Paul Hardaker in his Jeanneau Fantasia Zuma taking part in their first ever race. To enable Paul, who has only been sailing for a year, to race Zuma was given a temporary handicap rating. After the race Paul said, 'He had very much enjoyed it, had flown his spinnaker 3 times and had never been out in so much wind!'

The race was closely fought with Adam Kyffin’s Flash II leading from start to finish, at the end of the race the finishers were all within 8 minutes of each other. Commodore John D’Henin won class 2 ahead of the previous Commodore Steve Harrison. In class 2 John Myerscough, sailing with one arm in a sling, managed to catch Richard Baldwin on the last leg of the course to take class 3.
