A very overcast and cool day for the start of the Inaugural Melbourne to Vanuatu Yacht Race, off Portsea Pier today.
With a top temperature of 14 degrees, the crews were rugged up for winter racing as they two sail reached to the turning mark at the base of the Queenscliff lighthouse, then tacked out the rip into Bass Strait. With relatively calm seas with little swell, the fleet were lead by the Volvo 60 Andrew Short Marine-Club Marine, who seemed to enjoy the heavier seas, once out in open water.
At some point in the next 1,850 nautical miles to Port Vila, today's wet weather gear should be swapped for more tropical attire.
