Upgrade for Tassie Cruising Guide – Can YOU Help?

by Nancy Knudsen on 26 Jun 2006
D’Entrecasteaux Waterways Cruising Guide. SW
Do you know of a rock that’s not marked? Do you have info on a new anchorage? Have you noticed an error? Now is your chance to improve the cruising guide information for future cruisers. Sailors who have sailed in Tasmania please assist in an upgrade of The D'Entrecasteaux Waterways Cruising Guide.

The cruising guide 'D'Entrecasteaux Waterways' was a joint effort between the Cruising Yacht Club of Tasmania(CYCT) and the then (Tasmanian Government) Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment. It is currently in its 2nd edition and the TasMap Division of the (now) Department of Primary Industries and Water recently approached the CYCT with a view to upgrading the guide. The main driver for the revision is the need to bring the maps up to the new map datum, GDA94. The existing charts are AGD66. The revision has been slotted into the Department's programme for completion by 6th August 2006 and the CYCT has been given the opportunity to update the text of the guide, add new maps for anchorages not contained in Edition 2 and re-align some of the existing maps.

The CYCT has established a working group to coordinate the effort, and Andrew Boon, one of the committee, (Dave Davey, Convenor, and Milton Cunningham are the others) was keen to talk to Sail-World Cruising about it.

'Dave (who is also the CYCT Webmaster) and his partner/crew Annick Ansselin (CYCT Membership Officer) came to Tasmania from NSW a few years ago with their yacht Windclimber,' he said, 'He has seen quite a few cruising guides in his travels and considered that D'Entrecasteaux Waterways was one of the best, so was quite keen to contribute to the new Edition.'

Milton and Andrew, on the other hand, are locals who believe what a lot of visiting yachties tell them, that the 'Channel' area has some of the best cruising grounds in Australia.

They are now urgently looking for comments and suggestions from anyone who has used the guide in the past. Comments and corrections hand-written on your copy, suggestions for improvements, favourite anchorages in the general area covered by the guide but not yet included, information which you think could be of valuable in the text . . .

If YOU know something that you think others may not, please send suggestions to waterways@cyct.org.au
