Day 3 470 Euros - Kiwis struggle in Hungary

by Event Media on 15 Jun 2006
Only one race could be completed in the light airs that prevailed for Day 3 Peter Beliczay / SAILING.HU
The two New Zealand crews competing in the 470 Mens event at the 2006 European Championships, in Hungary, are in 33rd and 51st place on the points table after three races.

Stephen and Philip Keen are lying in 33rd place after scoring a 9th in their fleet overnight. At this stage their objective will be to stay in contact, and make the cut for the Gold fleet. Due to weather delays it is not certain how the rest of the regatta will be scheduled. First option for officials will be to try and catch up races, but time may be against them.

The other New Zealand crew of Geoff Woolley and Mark Overington are in 51st place overall having finiushed in 15th place in the one race sailed overnight.

Report from the official website:

The Hungarian Sallai Gábor-Olosz Dávid couple won a race in the strongest men's group, split into three parts and counting 112 members. In the White group they defeated such famous opponents as the World Champion Australian couple, Nathan Wilmot-Malcolm Page (22.), the leaders of this current competition - the Italian Enrico Fonda-Marco Guerra páros (3.) and the Italian crew that occupies the second position in the wolrd rank, Gabrio Zandona-Andrea Trani (7.).

The Sallai-Olosz crew, after a good start, sailed in the leading group and, in the last but one, highly windy etap(?), they used genial tactics to avoid their opponents and reached the finish line first, three meters ahead of the Austrian couple,Matthias Schmid-Florian ReichsteaderMatthias Schmid-Florian Reichsteader, who occupy the elite sixth position in the world rank.

By this victory the Hungarian unit went up 25 places in the overall rank and they are now among the best 20. The are currently the 18th.

The other Hungarian boats were not really successful today, in the weak wind. The next Hungarian couple after the Sallai-Olosz unit, the Vígh-Perjés pair awaits the next events on Thursday at the 77th position.

In the women's competition the rank did not change in the first two poitions. The German Stefanie Rothweiler-Vivien Kussatz crew arrived to the finish line second in their group and therefore they preserved their leading position; the British Christina Bassandone-Saskia Clark unit came in second in their group so now they follow the German team in the rank. The winner of the White group, the Swedish Therese Torgersson-Vendela Zachrisson couple came up to the third overall rank.
