NZL Yachting Trust Auckland Fiji Race Finished

by Penny Grayson, RAYC on 14 Jun 2006 All the boats who raced the NZL Yachting Trust 2006 Auckland to Fiji Race are now safely at the marina at Vuda Point. The last boats in were the shorthanded boats, who finished during the evening on Saturday.

Skiddy Two, raced single handedly by Bretton Holland was the first to cross the line in this division and also takes the honours on handicap.

Line honours on elapsed time went to Pussy Galore skippered by Anatole Masfen wh took five days to complete the race, the IRC handicap trophy also goes to Pussy Galore, the ORC trophy to Wild Card skippered by Ray and Andrew Lodge, and the PHRF trophy goes to Lion NZ. The prize giving will be held on Sunday evening where the prestigious trophies and prizes donated by local sponsors First Landing Resort, Creative Wood Design, Jacks of Fiji, NADS Handicrafts and Captain Cook Cruisers will be presented.

This year for the first time there were two starts three days apart out of Auckland and a new Division of cruisers, the Bula division where boats could motor and would be handicapped according to declared time and distances of motoring. The reasoning behind this was to get the slower and the fast boats all finishing within a shorter time frame in Fiji. This was achieved with all finishers in over a span of four and a half days. It also meant boats that may not have entered because of time constraints were encouraged to do so, giving a bigger overall fleet.

The Wednesday start who were the smaller boats (Corinthian Division) and the motoring cruisers (Bula Division) had a slow first couple of days in light winds and then were hit by strong winds sometimes up to 40 knots around day 3 of the race. Many suffered breakages and all reported not eating for a couple of days as they hunkered down in the fairly extreme conditions.

The Premier Start on Saturday set off in these conditions - 20-30 knots winds on the nose for the first couple of days and then hit strong westerlies making the first few days of racing very hard work - as they got closer to Fiji they have some great sailing in the trade winds in a range of wind strengths and towards the end of the race, many crews reported the best sailing they had ever experienced.

Feedback from the competitors is very positive about Vuda Point as a destination - the skies have been clear and the days warm and all their needs are well catered for. The organizers in Fiji have put together a great entertainment package for them during their stay.
