World leaders prevail in first day of 470 Euros

by Event Media on 13 Jun 2006
A start in the 470 Europeans on Day 1, gets underway in light airs Peter Beliczay / SAILING.HU
The first day of racing has concluded in the Nissan 470 Eurpoean Championships being sailed in Hungary.

Two New Zealand crews are competing - the Keen brothers from Christchurch who lie in 37th place overall after two races, and Geoff Wooolley and Mark Overington who are 53rd overall.

The participants competed in two races; males compete in three groups (White, Blue and Pink), while females in two groups (White and Pink) because of the high number of competitors.

There were no great surprises, in case of both men and women the world leaders took the leading positions.

In the women’s event, after two races the pair Stefanie Rothweiler – Vivien Kussatz is leading, who won both competitions today in the Blue group. The British pair leading the world rank, Christina Bassadone – Saskia Clark finished second, both times, in the White Group, therefore, overall, they have the second place. The third place is occupied by the Japanese crew, Ai Kondo-Midori Ikemoto, who won the second race in the White group. The European Champion French unit, Ingrid Petitjean-Nadège Douroux, is the sixth for the time being.

In the men’s competitions the Italian pair, Enrico Fonda - Marco Guerra, won the first race in the Pink group by confident sailing and as they finished second in the second run, they are the current overall leaders. The Slovenian couple Tomaz Copi-Aljaz Jadek is second and the Argentin Javier Conte-Juan de la Fuente are third.

The result of the Hungarian unit, Sallai Gábor-Olosz Dávid, could only be mentioned, however they performed a fairly weak start in the first race and could not achieve substantial advantage later but their performance in the second run, reaching the sixth place, could be evaluated as good.

The couple D’Albini András-Szépfy Zsombor can also be mentioned; they sailed in the fourth-fifth place in the first race but finally they finished in the twelvth place. The second race did not work well for them, therefore they are currently the overall 72th. Unfortunately one Hungarian crew (Cserép Csongor-Brencsán Dávid) was remonstrated for early start and another one (Sipos Ágoston-Damokos Attila) was forced to give up the second race due to technical difficulties.

According to the newly introduced rules the members of the different groups will be drawn again on Tuesday; this rule allows the participants to compete with different opponents. If the weather is good there will be again two races, starting from 10 a.m.
