49er Worlds Qualification series ended

by Event media on 9 Jun 2006
Light conditions in the 49er Worlds at Club Nautique Voile Aix les Bains François Gravier, Club Nautique Voile Aix les Bain
It was early this morning that things got sealed for the final rankings. The organizations had decided to start the race earlier to take advantage of better early morning breeze.

The Olympics champions, the Spanish, seems to be reconciled with the venue (thanks to the south wind!) finishing first and third climbing in the general ranking to the 10th position. Best placed Britons are Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks in seventh at the end of qualifying. Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes are 11 and John Pink and Alek Hopson are in 15.

The surprising Greek team Athanasios Pachoumas and Athanasios Siouzios were very consistent (1 time first, 3 time second, 2 time third !). Behind them the Germans Marcus Baur (the only sailor to have sailed all ten world championships since 1997) and Max Groy also showed they are serious competitors with 4 first places, one third place and unfortunately one seventh place which heavily penalized them.

The world champion Rodion LUKA and George LEONCHUK are still very much in the running with a close third in spite of missing the first race in the morning!

The young Australian teams are still up the rankings having surprised many with their consistency. Most of the top competitors are all in the top fleet and close on points. Only 15 points separates first 15 positions.

It’s all up for grabs in the final series and everyone waits with awaited breadth for tomorrows racing to start. Tomorrow the finals will start at nine o’clock with 25 boats in the gold fleet,33 boats the silver fleet and 34 in the bronze fleet.
