Weather the winner on the day

by Ashburton Guardian on 7 Jun 2006
The start of the men’s division 3 coxed fours at the South Island Master - Lake Hood Event Media
The South Island Masters Rowing at Lake Hood at the weekend was cancelled just two and half hours into the event after wet and windy weather created safety concerns.

Competitors managed to get through seven events on the Sunday before the weather closed in and the club was forced to cancel the event, which was held over the Saturday and Sunday of Queen’s Birthday.

The long race held on the Saturday went ahead in good conditions with Invercargill emerging as the winners.

More than 160 masters rowers and support crew attended the weekend’s regatta. The masters are open to anyone over the age of 27, although most competitors were in their fifties.

Even though the event was not completed, Ashburton Rowing had received a positive response from everyone who attended the event, with many saying it was still a success despite the weather, Ashburton Rowing Club secretary Pauline Wilson said, adding everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
A prizegiving and a dinner were held on Sunday night.

The winning clubs in the events that were not cancelled:
men’s single overall: Avon (Christchurch);
men’s double over 50: Invercargill;
women’s single: Blenheim;
men’s fours: Avon (Christchurch);
women’s double: Cure (Kaiapoi);
men’s single over 50: Awarua;
women’s fours under 50: Port Chalmers.
