Two well known offshore sailors Mike Sanderson and Emma Richards MBE said 'I do' to each other yesterday in a marriage ceremony at the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes, IOW. Emma Richards was reported as being a very beautiful bride and proud Mike Sanderson looked very smart with his nine bestmen.
Sanderson has some sailing credentials. His bride Emma Richards was awarded her MBE after sailing into the record books as the youngest person and first British woman to complete the 29,000 mile solo round the world yacht race, Around Alone.
Emma Richards competed onboard her 60 foot yacht ‘Pindar’ named after the international print and electronic media company of the same name who have sponsored her for the last five years.
In the Around Alone, Emma was at sea for over 135 days on her own during which she survived a hurricane, a terrifying climb of her 80 foot mast, a pirate scare and the extreme conditions of the Southern Ocean.
Sanderson is one of New Zealand’s top sailors. He is the skipper of ABN Amro One, winner of the 2005/06 Volvo Ocean race with two legs to spare.
Richards and Sanderson, were co-skippers of the Open 60, Pindar, a competitor in the 2003 Transat Jacques Vabre.
The couple had been one of the favourites in the race and but were forced to withdraw after losing their instruments very early in the race.
