Slingsby wins Lasers, Australians in Medal Rounds at Holland Regatta

by RYA/Sail-World on 28 May 2006
Tom Slingsby won the Laser Class at the Holland Regatta, not needing to sail tomorrow Medal Race. After winning at Hyeres and again last week at the ISAF World Games, Central Coast sailor Tom Slingsby has maintained another classy display, clear ahead of the field, with only 19 points after 10 races, 30 points ahead of Dei Solar from China with Paul Goodison from the UK another point back, he can not be beaten in the 10 boat Medal Round.

This is looking like a 'groundhog' European Regatta season, for the 21 year old from Gosford Sailing Club. Last year the freckled faced youngster won four European regattas - Hyères, Kiel, Garda and the Holland regatta.

Three police boats continued their search for the missing German coach, who disappeared from his boat on the Laser Radial race course yesterday (Thursday) while out supporting his daughter, who was competing here in Medemblik. His identity is still to be confirmed by regatta organisers.

Heading in to the final day of competition, the Medal Race on Sunday, Australian sailors currently occupy podium positions in four classes.

The medal race is the new Olympic competition format which has been in operation only since Sail Melbourne in January. It features a single final race featuring the top ten boats, to conclude the race series in each of the classes. The medal race must be counted in the scoreline and scores double points.

In the Mens 470 Class Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page were inconsistent after their first race win, but have come back strongly to be second placed going into the Medal Round, with Matt Belcher and Nick Behrens close behind in fifth place.

Darren Bundock and Glen Ashby were also inconsistent in the early part of the regatta but came back strongly when it counted yesterday with a third and two wins behind two French crews.

In the Laser Radial Class, Sarah Blanck is third overall and Krystal Weir seventh.

Nathan Outteridge and Ben Austin have made the cut finishing seventh in the 49er class.

Queenslander Brendan Casey just missed the cut in the Laser Class finishing eleventh overall. Lauren Jefferies and Rike Zeigelmayer missed the cut, finishing 15th in the Womens 470. Anthony Nossiter was 11th in the Finn Class, Allision Shreeve will be disappointed with her 21st place in the RS:X Womens fleet. Nicky Bethwaite and crew were 19th in the Ynglings and Sean O'Brien 58th in the Mens Windsurfers.
