Two times World Rowing Champion, Mike Stanley will travel to Munich today to support Rowing New Zealand’s bid to host the 2010 World Rowing Championships.

Stanley will join Rowing New Zealand Chairman Bill Falconer and CEO Craig Ross in presenting New Zealand’s bid proposal to the International Rowing Federation, FISA.

'It is imperative that we leave no stone unturned' said Ross

'Mike is an iconic New Zealand oarsman who is well respected within the International Rowing Community. It is important for us to convey to FISA that the 2010 World Championships will be an athlete’s regatta. We introduced this theme by appointing Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell as our 2010 Athletes Ambassadors when we launched our bid in Turkey last November, however their training commitments prior to departing to Europe in three weeks time to defend their 4th consecutive World Championship title does not allow them to join us in Munich' said Ross.

The Rowing NZ bid presentation reflects that Rowing New Zealand is able to commit to FISA a governance, management and administration infrastructure capable of delivering a an outstanding World Rowing championship regatta and that in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand has an ‘Aquatic Stadium’ which presents a ‘fair’ venue for the 2010 World Rowing Championships.

'Equally, we are now in a position to demonstrate to FISA that we have secured funding commitments from Central and Local Government, Corporate Sponsorship and that the Host Broadcasting partnership secured with SKY

Television will provide a superior international broadcast coverage that FISA has yet experienced' concluded Ross.

The Rowing New Zealand delegation makes their bid presentation to FISA on Sunday following the first round of the World Cup series.

FISA will make their recommendation to the 115 International Rowing Federations by mid June.

New Zealand will face stern competition from Amsterdam, the Netherlands for the 2010 World Rowing Championship hosting rights

The appeal of offshore
Is there still appeal? Have we made it too onerous? Why would someone take it up now? I had been pondering. Yes. Marquee events have no issue attracting entrants. Middle Sea, Transpac, Cape to Rio, Fastnet, and Hobart all spring to mind instantly, but what of the ‘lesser' races? Lots of boats in pens (slips) a lot of the time

Night sailing, encountering light airs in the Transat Paprec, Congressional Cup We bundled up as the last of the rays sunlight dipped below the Olympic Mountains and night quietly fell on Puget Sound.
