The Skrew Anchor: When is a permanent mooring not a permanent mooring? If you leave your anchor down with a line to shore so that you can return and pick it up at will, is that permanent? Or temporary? Or just sneaky? An incredibly innovative idea has blurred forever the notion of permanent vs temporary for the sailor who wants to return to the same spot time after time.
They work, of course in mud or sand, and don’t work on a rocky bottom. They can be installed by a diver, or maybe at low tide for some applications. Apart from using them in front of your waterside house, you can anchor anything from a floating dock to a fish farm.
Made out of good quality steel, they display high holding power, are low cost and exceptionally simple. They come in a range of sizes to suit boats up to 25 tons, and over that weight several anchors can be used in conjunction.
According to the manufacturers of these little gems, a specialised company, who can follow the specifications of the process, should carry out the installation of the Skrew anchor.
The company producing the innovative anchors is Spade, producers of two other excellent anchoring products, the Spade anchor and the Sword Anchor.
