Gauchers Charity Pursuit race at HISC

by HISC media on 4 May 2006
Hayling Island SC HISC
Four times a year Hayling Island SC allocates a holiday weekend for a Charity Pursuit Race. This May Day holiday the charity that supports and funds research into the rare disorder - Gauchers Disease - was chosen.

In September 2005 at the age of four, Henry the oldest son of HISC members Ian and Lucy Jameson, was diagnosed with a rare genetically inherited enzyme deficiency disorder called Gauchers Disease. Symptoms range from mild to severe and can appear at any time, from infancy to old age. Symptoms may include anaemia, fatigue, easy bruising and a tendency to bleed. An enlarged spleen and liver with a protruding stomach may also occur as well as bone pain, demineralisation and fractures.

Ian and Lucy put together a great sailing day and organised a number of other events on the day which included a visit by one of Henrys fantastic Nurses and one of the research nurse’s from Great Ormond Street Hospital. The girls are mad enough to attempt to row the Atlantic next year in a bid to raise money for metabolic research at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

On the day the turn out was fantastic with 53 boats entered. The weather despite the forecast was super and competitors and spectators all had a great time. Entries to the race alone raised £304. With other fund raising efforts a fantastic £784.50 was raised.

The racing:
A great days sailing for the Gauchers Charity Pursuit race at Hayling Island SC on Monday 1 May. The 53 entries enjoyed sun and excellent sailing conditions. The wind was around 12 knots at the start for the RS Fevas and increased throughout the race with some stronger gusts.

The average 15 knots breeze brought the power guys to the fore - victory going to the 29er of Gemma McIntyre and Steve Wilson, second place went to Simon Allen on an International Canoe and third place to another 29er, that of Henry Maxfield and Dicken MacLean.

A wide range of classes took part with David and Fiona Sayce leading the RS800 (4th), Mark Upton-Brown and Ian Mitchell the 505 (5th), Nick and Kate Peters the RS200 (6th).

Mike McIntyre and Alain Sign lead home the Flying 15 (7th), Mike Lennon and Jon Blackburn the International 14 (9th), Mike Tong and P Wareham/D Nicholls the RS Elite (10th).
