Latest ISAF Rankings

The start of a season of European sailing is upon us, with three major all Olympic Classes regattas set to mark the early challengers for gold in Beijing 2008.

With the preparatory regattas completed the latest release of the ISAF World Sailing Rankings sees one of the long time leaders fall from their perch and the most successful nation, Britain lose the last of its number one spots.

After 20 consecutive releases and a run of over 18 months in the number one spot Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks (GBR) are replaced by Rodion Luka and George Leonchuk (UKR) at the top of the 49er standings. Elsewhere the other ten leaders hold firm this release and will head to Hyères and the ISAF Grade 1 Semaine Olympique Française all set to defend their position as the World number one.

In contrast the Rankings continue to make happy reading for the Spanish and New Zealanders, both with two top spots apiece.

Despite their lack of leaders, Britain can still claim more crews in the top threes than any other nation at seven, with France remaining in second place with five. Spain also stay third on four crews, although New Zealand drop back with just two leaders.

Both Austria and the USA are also putting in very strong performances with three crews apiece in the top three positions.

One of the biggest losers in recent seasons has been Australia; double Gold at the Sydney Olympics and now Krystal Weir, currently fifth in the Laser Radials is the top ranked Australian sailor. Australian head coach Victor Kovalenko will be expected a big European summer from the Australian squad.

Amongst the Rankings for the eleven Olympic events, ISAF Rolex World Sailors of the Year and Tornado World and European Champions Fernando Echavarri and Anton Paz (ESP) continue to hold the biggest points total of 5075.

Paige Railey (USA) also maintains by far the biggest lead, extending this month from 344 to 366 points despite her near-yearlong string of podium places coming to an end in Palma.
At the opposite end of the scale Robert Scheidt (BRA) also maintains a one point lead over Paul Goodison (GBR) at the top of the Laser Rankings, although a finish of eighth or better in Hyères should finally lift the Brit above the Brazilian.

France’s 470 crew of Ingrid Petitjean and Nadege Douroux are have now been the longest on top of the current leaders. They have held 21 consecutive number one spots since 1 October 2003 and with 242 points separating them from Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark (GBR) in second place, look good to make it 22 on 3 May.

With three ISAF Grade 1 all Olympic Classes regattas coming up, led by the ISAF Grade 1 Semaine Olympique Française next week, there is all to play for in the Rankings.
The next Rankings release will be on 3 May, following the ISAF Grade 1 Semaine Olympique Francaise.
