Hamilton Boys retain Springbok Shield

There was little doubt that Hamilton Boys were the dominant squad in the Under 18 events at Maadi 2005, at Karapiro.

Question was, would they be able to do the same again in 2006, with a new coach and on the blue waters of Lake Ruataniwha. Sure they had shown an edge in the North Islands two weeks previously, but this was new field, and by virtue of their heat win on Monday, Hamilton Boys could have been a little underdone.

Wanganui Collegiate, racing in the blue and black quartered singlets, jumped to an early lead in Lane 7, with Hamilton Boys alongside in Lane 6.

At the 750 metre mark Wanganui Collegiate saw much of their half boatlength lead had been eroded, as the boys from the Waikato showed they weren’t there for the sightseeing, and moved through into the lead at about 800 metres out from the start.

From there on, it was a very controlled race with Hamilton Boys clearly with a game plan to get in front and stay there.

At the 1000 metre mark, Hamilton had a quarter of a boat length lead over Wanganui easing out to two boatlengths as they went through the 1500 metres and could pick up the roar of the crowd.

Now it was Wanganui Collegiate’s turn to come under challenge from Kings College in the outside lane eight.

At 1750 metres Hamilton Boys had proven too strong for the rest of the field and the interest shifted back to the remaining medals. Wanganui Collegiate gave away the chase for first, and had a real fight on their hands for the silver, as St Kentigerns and Kings pulled out all the stops.

Going through the finish it was the red and black colours of Hamilton Boys, with three crews in a line for the silver and bronze medals. It was too close for the commentator to call and it fell to the line judge to place Wanagnui Collegiate in second place less than half a second ahead of St Kentigerns, with Kings a touch away in fourth place.
