Russell and Andrew Short winners of Burton 505 Open Meeting 505 http://www.505sapworldchampionship2009.com/
Burton Sailing Club hosted the first 505 open meeting of the year. Race 1 started in considerably more than the forecast 12 Knots with Russell and Andrew Short leading at the windward mark chased hard by Ross & Adam Kenney, Jack Hayhurst & Adrian Coates who slipped by to record what was to be their first second place of the day.

Race 2 saw Richard Sims & Simon Wood leading at the windward mark from the new pairing of Andy Smith & Norman Byrd (Norman having previously helmed a 505 was heard to comment how hard crewing a 505 really is !!) These positions were maintained until the final run to the finish where a gybeing duel commenced which saw Jack and Adrian take second and the Short brothers sneak their second win of the day.

Sunday Race 3: The racing proved to be fast and furious and unfortunately wet for some! The Race Officer set what proved to be a challenging course, Sims & Wood led at the first windward mark, which proved to be short lived with a number of other teams taking the lead for a period of time. Harry & Simon Briddon sailing their new boat made places on the second beat, Stuart Turnball & Jason Lunn also in a new boat pulled through to take third place. By this point the race was being led by Smith & Byrd who, whilst avoiding a capsized boat, capsized themselves whilst dropping the spinnaker at the leeward mark. The race was eventually won by the Short brothers from Sims and Wood.

Race 4: Sims & Wood led in shifty conditions to record their first win, chasing hard were Smith & Byrd and John Webster & Rob Burdikin. The first windward mark proved eventful with Jason Lunn narrowly avoiding injury by hurdling the capsizing mast of the Shorts.

Race 5 The Shorts led at the first windward mark in what was now a dying breeze. Smith and Byrd changed rig settings early to push hard upwind, however these positions were maintained until the finish.

The 505 fleet travels next to this year’s World’s venue HISC for a training weekend. The next UK event is the Inland Championships at Carsington SC on the 29 & 30 April.
