Around Twizel - Where to Go and See

by Rowing-World on 29 Mar 2006
Rautaniwha, Ohau, Pukaki and Tekapo Lakes Google Earth
Around Twizel, when the rowing is in recess, there is plenty to see and see and see.

If you are into sightseeing and would relish the chance to see New Zealand the way nature intended, then you could spend a week, or two, or three in the Twizel, Mt Cook, Tekapo and Ohau areas. The area is an optical feast, and not to be missed.

A few things that wouldn't fit on the map....

Between Twizel and Benmore are the Clay Cliffs - which involve a walk across private land. A lot of people do the drive to Mt Cook (Aorangi), it is a fairly stunning sight, however the awesome residue of glacial action is equally impressive.

The road to Ohau is a little tame and windy, until you turn the corner, and hit the view in this scene of the Lake. The sealed road runs out and goes into metal and then you come to the end of the road and it is just the way it has always been.

Many people also head south to Queenstown, and you can come back on the Crown Range Road. Very spectacular - but make sure your driver keeps their eyes on the road!

And if you've never been to Twizel before or aren't there now - here's a few shots to show you what you have missed....
