Games in the Heats of Girls Eight?

by Rowing-World on 28 Mar 2006
Crews await the start of the Girls U-18 Heats SIR (South Island Rowing)
Defending champions, Rangi Ruru continued their dominance of the U-18 Girls Eight, winning their heat and setting the fastest time. St Margarets who dominated the GU18 Fours yesterday finished third in their heat.

Surprise packet was the rise of Wanganui Collegiate, in winning the first heat of the event, and pushing the highly fancied St Margaret’s crew back into third place. They will have to place in the top three of their repechage to qualify for the A Final of the event on Saturday afternoon.

Following Rangi Ruru home in the second heat was the North Island Champions, Westlake Girls, who were almost three lengths adrift of the 2005 Gold medallists in this event.

The times comparison between the two winning crews shows that less than half a second covered Rangi Ruru and Wanganui Collegiate.

Interestingly Wanganui did not compete at the North island Championships two weeks ago, and the South Island Secondary Schools at Lake Ruataniwha where blown out in the same weekend. So for both schools it was something of an arm-wrestle and will make for a fascinating final on Saturday.

The St Margarets result was surprising after they had won both heats of their U18 Four heats on Monday – yet the combined crew could only manage third today. Raising the question as to whether there is a bigger gameplan in place geared to getting some more racing, given that conditions are likely to remain fine for the rest of the week, and it would appear that there will be ample time for rest before the main event on Saturday afternoon.
