St Margarets dominate Dawn Cup Heats for U184+

by Rowing World on 27 Mar 2006
Only two qualify, Timaru just prevail over Waikato Dio in GU184+ SIR (South Island Rowing)
St Margarets emerged from the Girl U184+ heats as clearly the dominant school, winning both their races by easy margins.

However in the third heat the winning crew from Wanganui Collegiate posted the fastest time of the day.

In Heat 1, St Margarets first crew was able to hold out Timaru Girls and Waikato Diocesan. There was a ding-dong battle between Timaru Girls and Waikato Diocesan with the Waikato School missing out on a final place by just half a second. They will go into the repechages tomorrow.

In the second heat St Margarets #2 had a relatively comfortable win over Tauranga Girls, with Nelson Girls a very safe third 12 seconds in arrears.

Wanganui Collegiate also had a very convincing win to qualify for the Finals heading off Gisbourne Girls by seven seconds and with Hamilton Girls a massive 27 seconds behind in third place and clearly intent on conserving their energies for the repechages.

The results in the racing upturned the form book from the North Island Championships, a couple of weeks ago. There, Gisbourne Girls won the gold medal, but were beaten today by Wanganui Collegiate, who did not compete at Karapiro.

The other two podium placegetters at the North Islands swapped places in Heat 1 with bronze medallist Waikato Diocesan heading off silver medallist St Mary’s Diocesan by a handy seven second, or 1.5 boatlengths margin.

Interestingly, the other dominant school in Girls rowing, Rangi Ruru did not enter the GU184+ event, but instead put two crews into the GU182+ event, earlier in the day. They finished first and second in their respective heats. Their old rival St Margarets, didn't enter a crew in this event.

The appeal of offshore
Is there still appeal? Have we made it too onerous? Why would someone take it up now? I had been pondering. Yes. Marquee events have no issue attracting entrants. Middle Sea, Transpac, Cape to Rio, Fastnet, and Hobart all spring to mind instantly, but what of the ‘lesser' races? Lots of boats in pens (slips) a lot of the time
