Andalusian Olympic Week - Opening Races

by Event Media on 28 Feb 2006
Opening weekend of the Andalusian Olympic Week (24 to 28 Feb) at El Puerto Santa Maria, Spain. A cold front passing over Andalusia brought damp but windy conditions for the sailors on the first day of racing and welcome rain for an area suffering from a severe drought. The tail end of the front on the second day produced winds of between 15 and 20 knots, with gusts of up to 26 knots, and a strong swell.

These conditions meant that the 49er class stayed on shore on Sunday, but provided an excellent day’s racing for the other class in brilliant sunshine.

470
After yesterday’s three straight bullets, Francisco Sanchez and Alejandro Ramos added another two first places to put them in a comfortable lead today ahead of Morten Bogackl and Christian Lindemann (GER). New to the class, Signe Llubjerg (DEN), the Bronze Medallist in the Europe class at Athens, had a good day after yesterday’s poor start.

'We have only been training for a few weeks in the 470 and this is our first event. It is really good practice as the conditions are quite challenging,' said Signe after today’s racing.

RSX
The Polish high wind experts dominated the day’s racing, with Michael Polanoswki scoring two and Przemek Miarzynski taking the other of the day’s bullets. Toni Wilhelm (GER) and Pawel Hiavaty (POL) both excelled in the strong westerly Poniente winds.

After an unlucky start on Saturday with two DNCs, Zofia Klepacka (POL) scored three straight bullets today. Olga Maslivets (BUL) leads the scoreboard after a constant performance.

'Today’s racing conditions were excellent for the new board and it was really fun out there.' she commented when she returned to shore.

Laser Standard
Marcin Rudawski (POL) leads after 5 races after a BFD knocked Denis Karpka (EST) back into fourth place. The local star, Julio Ruiz consolidated his place in the top five with today’s consistent performance.

Laser Radial
Katarzyna Szotynska (POL) leads with a comfortable five point lead in a top five dominated by Spanish Sailors.
