Volvo Extreme 40 event on Sky TV

by Event Media/GN on 17 Feb 2006
The Volvo Extreme 40s racing on the opening day at Sanxenxo, Galicia, Spain. Volvo Extreme 40/ Ben Faber
.

During the course of next week Sky are running some excellent coverage of the first Volvo Extreme 40 (VX40) event in Spain. Alongside of some excellent footage of high speed racing, the boat and the format are explained in detail. See below for full programme.

Also, the boat of Team Tommy Hilfiger, winner of the first VX40 event in Spain made a spectacular appearance in Poland recently. Hilfiger’s catamaran fresh from its win in the first round of the Volvo Ocean Race was put on display for a week in the main entrance of the Arkadia shopping centre in Warsaw, Poland.

In one weekend alone, over 200,000 visitors saw the boat and an extra 600 people more than normal came into our store in the centre.

It was a bit of a tight squeeze - the boat only just fitted into the main hall. When fully rigged, the mast stands 18 meters tall! It took a team of specialists a whole day to squeeze it into the center and position it correctly.

Once it was set up, there was a special opening party and a press conference. The number one local TV station covered the spectacle, together with 15 of Poland’s top magazines.

During the week, shoppers were invited to enter a competition to spend a day on the boat during one of the races as a part of the Volvo ocean race. The questions were: Who is the skipper of the boat that won the first stop over race in Spain? And when is Tommy Hilfiger launching its new sailing gear line?
