Report on N22 champs sailed at Port Chalmers YC

by Alec Knewstubb on 30 Jan 2006
The fleet approaches the bottom mark in the Noelex 22 Nationals Alec Knewstubb
Sixteen boats fronted At the Noelex 22 Nationals, sailed from the Port Chalmers YC.

Boats travelled from Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin and Alexandra. Surprisingly ten boats from the South Island's contest fleet of 22 didn't enter but there were four new faces

Organisers were extremely fortunate to get all races done as there were gales for days before, through the nights and 30 minutes after we finished the contest Saturday. However the winds during racing were light 5 -10 knots mostly and shifty from about 330deg round to 180degrees. Every race was on a different heading and had changes, sometimes multiple and drastic, to keep the legs fair.

At the end of the first days schedule of four races we had had four different winners - Charade, Cannonball, Lyric and Outlaw .

Superann (in the hands of a fourteen year old) also got into the podium places for the day, and it looked like the contest might be in for a shake up.

Day 2's racing was a little fresher at times and although Cannonball got seriously buried on occasions, and although any number of boats found themselves leading the pack, she did come through and win all four for the day.

The final morning was again only gentle airs and Outlaw put some interest back in by winning the first race with Cannonball fourth. However it was shortlived as Richard Hawkins cleared out in the last. He won the championship with six firsts, a second and a fourth counting and two fourth placings dropped.
