Manly Junior 37th National Titles – So Far !

by Sally Darmanin on 7 Jan 2006
Alex McFadyen - 2006 Manly Junior National Titles Sally Darmanin
51 Entries are competing at Belmont 16s on Lake Macquarie for the 37th National Championship. Two fleets are competing; 20 Novices in their first year of Skippering and 31 Main Fleet, sailing for the Big Prize. The win is not yet in the bag and positions two through to five are very very close.

Heat 1 and 2 were sailed in 8 – 12 knot breezes and were dominated by Alex McFadyen and Mathew Stocks from Manly 16’s with a four minute margin in the second race. Day two brought even lighter breezes with McFadyen still maintaining dominance over club mate Jonathon Roel and Ira Dubery and RPAYC Sailors Karl Bromfeild and Charlie Bradshaw.

Day 3, and Heats 4 and 5 saw new faces on the winners podium. Paul Darmanin and Lucy Copeland from Manly 16s and Tim Forbes-Smith and Oliver Giles from Avalon. Conditions were very difficult and saw shifty five-eight knot breezes, testing the maturity and patience of all skippers.

The Novice Division is decided on Handicap results, to highlight the improvement of the Skippers. Local Sailors from Belmont, Nina Long and Geordi Golden in a borrowed boat, are showing great promise with a win on scratch and Handicap. Other Novice winners on handicap include Jarrod Stain and Adam Bradley from RMYC, Will Coxon and Daniel Wear and Jessica Peach and Taylah Stain from Avalon, and George Stent and Steven Boukatos from Vaucluse.
