Over 70 Zephyrs expected for Class 50th Jubilee Nationals
by Tim Snedden on 20 Dec 2005

Organisers are expecting a record fleet for the 50th Jubileee and Nationals of the Zephyr Class to be held at Milford Beach. Zephyr Owners Association
The Zephyr is a classic NZ sailing dinghy designed by Des Townson in 1956. It is still a popular class today with over 100 registered boats, and around 40 boats participating in the last national championships.
The class will be 50 years old in 2006, and to mark the occasion, the Zephyr Owners Association is organising a Jubilee regatta to be held in conjunction with the 2006 National Championships.
This will be held at Milford Cruising Club on Waitangi weekend, 3rd – 6th February 2006. It will be hosted by Milford Cruising Club and race management will be provided by Takapuna Boating Club.
Organisers are hoping the regatta will attract possibly the largest fleet of Zephyrs ever seen, about 70 boats, and will celebrate the history of a classic NZ yacht design. A large contingent is expected to attend the event from Canterbury and Hamilton.
Serious racing will be supplemented by a celebration sailpast open to any previous Zephyr owner. The history of the class will be on display with the participation of Des Townson’s original prototype Átarangi’, also Zephyr No.1 through to Zephyr No. 509, the newest boat built. Des Townson has kindly accepted an invitation to be guest of honour at the Jubilee dinner.
