Eastsail courses for Sydney 38 sailor

An Early Christmas present for Mrs Emily McCutcheon of Erskineville, who won the Eastsail Sailing Course competition drawn last earlier in the month, after entries closed on Sail-World.

This morning Emily, who crews on a Sydney 38, The Bolter, sailing out of RPAYC, explained she is keen to extend her sailing knowledge and is planning to do an offshore related course, probably Navigation.

Emily has been doing some steering in the Tuesday Lady's twilight race and will be racing aboard The Bolter in the upcoming Pittwater and Coffs Harbour series.

Emily has won $ 500 worth of Eastsail Basic or Advanced Courses. As Dayne Sharpe the RYA Training Manage at Eastsail explained ‘Emily has a wide choice of course from RYA Dayskipper, offshore and theory courses, offshore introduction, Coastal Navigation, Seamanship, Spinnaker Course, Radar, Diesel, Engines or Marine Radio, Marine First Aid, Sea Safety and Survival.

‘Eastsail teaches from the very basics with the Start Yachting Course right through to Yachtmaster Level. Our RYA qualified Instructors/Skippers are the best in the Country – there is a huge range of expertise amongst them.

‘If it is learning to sail around the harbour you want, we can teach it, or if you wish to circumnavigate the World, we can train you. Learn to race, use the radio, maintain your diesel motor or practice first aid, we can show you how to do it all!

Below are details on the range of Courses

The winner Mrs Emily McCutheon of Erskenville Sydney can select one course or a combination of courses plus 'top up' if over the $500. Here are the choices

Marine Radio: Follows the syllabus of the Marine Operators Certificate of Proficiency as provided by the Office of Maritime Communications. Subjects are: Legal responsibilities, standard operating procedures, distress, urgency and safety calls, digital selective calling, EPIRBS, search and rescue responsibilities and radio troubleshooting. Course Length: Day One, 9am - 5:30pm and Day 2 6 - 9pm including written exam. Cost: $ 280

Marine First Aid: A work placed approved course with a marine emphasis - Australian Red Cross exam and certification. Specific subjects are: Marine first aid kits, hypothermia, pain management including injections, seasickness, amputation and crush injuries, related crew overboard issues, seeking assistance, drowning, air extraction and patient handling. Course Length Day One 9am - 5:30pm Day 2 6 - 9:30pm Cost: $225

Sea Safety and Survival Course RYA and ISAF endorsed course that includes the life raft drill in the pool. Course Length 3 night 6:30pm - 10:30pm and full day 8:30am - 6:30pm Cost: $440

RYA Start Yachting Course - Courses commence regularly and the booking structure is flexible. Course times: 9 - 12 or 12:30 - 3:30 or 4 - 7pm Four 3 hour onboard lessons, a theory session, a Club Race, RYA Logbook and handbook and course kit. Cost $475

RYA Competent Crew and Dayskipper Two day offshore courses. Sail to Pittwater for the weekend, covers navigation, seamanship, passage planning, tidal work and much more. Crew of four plus Instructor. Food and wet weather gear provided Cost $495 per two days.(Competent crew - two weekends required to gain certificate, Dayskipper - three weekends required to gain certificate)

RYA Competent Crew/Dayskipper Theory Courses Can be done as an evening or weekend course

Coastal Navigation - Twelve hour course covering charts, positioning, direction, speed, compass, dead reckoning, tides and more. Cost $365

Seamanship - Twelve hour course covering international regulations for prevention of collisions at sea, anchoring, mooring, aids to navigation, safety at sea. Cost $295

Dayskipper completion - Eighteen hour course covering tides and tidal streams, estimated position with tidal streams, meteorology, passage planning, electronic aids to navigation and two assessment papers. Cost $445

Pittwater Dash - a sprint up the coast to Pittwater and back aboard a Beneteau 40.7 ft yacht. A real opportunity to experience offshore sailing for the first time. Sail up to Pittwater during the day; enjoy lunch anchored in a secluded bay then return to Sydney making a night time entrance through Sydney Heads. Wet weather gear provided. BYO lunch and refreshments Cost $250

Radar course - Learn all of the intricacies of operating a small boat Radar. Covers understanding the picture, fixing position by radar, pilotage by radar and collision avoidance and much more. One day course . Cost $175

Diesel Engine course - Learn about the fuel, cooling, electrical and air systems, turbo charging and servicing - basic maintenance and engine care. One day course .Cost $175

Spinnaker Course - Learn the procedure for spinnaker flying, setup with sheets and pole, trim and helming. An intensive one day course that covers all the aspects of basic spinnaker sailing aboard a 33 - 36ft yacht. Cost $225

Erica Lush Completes Bermuda 1-2 Regatta First Leg
While training for the Solitaire Du Figaro Rhode Island sailor Erica Lush completed the first leg of the Bermuda 1-2 regatta as the only woman skipper in the fleet. Lush sailed solo from Newport to Bermuda, handling a boat new to her, and rough sea state.
