Two Scandinavian sailors who have set out to round both the Horn and the Cape of Good Hope in a Bavaria 42 will start their international sailing this year with the ARC Rally.

Eivind Bogerud and his partner Heidi Vage have lived on board Empire their Bavaria 42 AC for the last two years preparing for their trip. Having both sailed for the last 20 years in Scandinavia and the North Sea, they have now set their hearts on voyaging further afield. For them the ARC will be the start of a five yearlong trip sailing around the world. After many years of planning they have now sold their apartments and loaded their possessions on to the yacht ready for their voyage, which will take them around the great Capes – Horn and Good Hope.

The couple left Oslo on the 3rd July and will be underway for the next five years visiting Grand Canaria, The Caribbean, East coast South America, Falklands, South Georgia, Antarctica, Patagonia, Pacific Ocean, Africa, Canaries, Caribbean, East coast North America, Greenland, Svalbard and Norway. This route not only means that they will be sailing around Cape Horn but they may also participate in the ARC twice during the five years.

Heidi and Eivind will be writing articles about their round the world trip for the Norwegian sailing magazine Seilas. They were chosen ahead of other cruisers to write about their trip by a reader’s poll in the magazine. You can follow their progress on the ARC website.

ARC 2005, the largest transocean sailing event in the world, starts from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Sunday 20 November at 12:40, and finishes at Rodney Bay, St.Lucia. It is timed to coincide with the end of the hurricane season in the Atlantic. While the emphasis is on sharing the adventure and camaraderie, some racing is included, and results will be published on the event website after the Prizegiving on Saturday 17 December. Most of the 225 yachts participating will take between 18 and 21 days to complete the 2700nm passage.
