Over the past 70 years Santana has been sailed by several owners but for 13 of these it was Humphrey Bogart who had the pleasure of calling this yacht his very own. No matter how many owners there may be, “Santana” always be known as 'Bogie’s Boat'. In Lauren Bacall’s recent autobiography, “By Myself and Then Some”, she writes, “If ever I had a woman to be jealous of, she was the Santana. Santana was beautiful, her sleek lines, the way she moved in the water.”
Originally built for the son of the founder of the Union Oil Company, Santana was christened in October 1935, and named after the hot Santa Ana winds of Southern California. In 1998, the Kaplan family began the extensive task of rebuilding the 62’ schooner to her former glory. Her rechristening on October 7 will pay tribute to the tremendous effort by the craftsmen at KKMI who made her restoration possible.
We invite you to attend a celebration of the 70th birthday of this classic schooner on Friday October 7, 6:00pm – 9:00pm, at KKMI in Point Richmond.
Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be followed by a tour of the Santana, a short film biography and a rechristening. For more information, or to RSVP (by October 3), contact Erica Kaplan (510) 235-5564 ext 125 or Erica@kkmi.com
