The Long Beach to Dana Point race can sometimes be a slow boat ride; however that was not the case when the first boat crossed the finish line just over 4-1/2 hours after the start.
Hosted by Shoreline Yacht Club and Dana West Yacht Club, the 22nd running of the event was held on Saturday, September 3 and as always started in Long Beach, California and finished roughly forty miles south in Dana Point.
Reynolds33.com a R33 Catamaran owned by Randy Reynolds was first to finish and first multi-hull to finish, crossing the line at roughly 4:45pm. Next across was Stark Raving Mad a J145 owned by Jim Madden.
Reynolds was able to keep his position on the podium taking the ORCA fleet win. However, Madden and crew were ousted by Farr40 White Knight owned by Zoltan Katinszky.
‘It was just one of those perfect, fun races where everything just falls into place. We got lucky especially at the start when Stark Raving Mad took us up right at the start and I don’t know why. Because they did, it allowed us to be in a controlling position and we were able to nail the start and were a boat length ahead.’
‘We were able to keep them in the lee and get some distance on them. They ended up pulling ahead but we were just behind them going out of the gate.’
‘The gate’ Zoltan referred to is the entrance to Los Angeles Harbor near San Pedro, California. The regatta is started on the waters of the inner harbor of Long Beach and the boats are sent west for a distance of roughly two miles where they exit the inner harbor and head out to open water.
They then must take two oil platforms to port before turning the ‘corner’ and heading towards Dana Point. This applies to the spinnaker fleet, but non-spinnaker boats exit the harbor just one mile from the start and have no marks until the finish.
The fleet started in winds ranging from 5-7 knots but found slightly fresher breeze offshore where it blew as high as 12 knots by one account.
