LV Act 6, Day 3- Mast accident less serious

After 'United Internet Team Germany' had won their first match race at the Louis Vuitton Act 6 for the 32nd America’s Cup against “China Team” in Swedish Malmö, an accident happened aboard the “GER-72”. Crew member Christian Buck had been in the top of the mast to drop the mainsail. When the 27 year-old was lowered, he lost control due to the strong swell and was thrown against the jumper.

Immediately after the accident, Christian Buck was medicated aboard by a doctor who was sailing with the team and afterwards brought by tender and ambulance to the university hospital in Lund.

Fortunately, the injuries seem – after the first medical examination – to be less serious than expected. At the moment it’s not clear to what extent a further medical treatment is needed. Christian Buck is conscious, his condition stable.

The sailor from Rostock is not in danger of life, but will stay overnight in the intensive care unit for further medical observation.

Skipper Jesper Bank and head of syndicate Uwe Sasse were after the accident accompanied by two fellow crew members by Buck’s side in the hospital.

The family was also informed immediately after the accident. His brother, who is in Malmö right now, is also in the hospital.
