True Love and Marisa in Cruising fleet

by Rob Kothe on 21 Aug 2005
Marisa leads Psycho Teri Dodds http://www.teridodds.com
The smallest boat at Hahn Premium Race Week, Raeburn Reynolds, 26 footer Marisa, a Morgan 780 led the 91-boat Cruising Division fleet out of Dent Passage today for the 23 mile Long Island race.

In the soft breeze, most of the heavyweight cruisers were having trouble accelerating off the startline, but the lightweight Marisa shot away from mid line moving out fast. Further towards the Hamilton Marina Phil Bates Adam 13 Psycho had one of the best starts.

In ten minutes, the colourful spinnaker fleet spread from Dent Island evenly across to Hamilton Island, some still struggling in the light airs to cross the line

Marisa was first to the Dent Island rounding mark, followed by Psycho, and then Ed Earl’s Farr 42 Fiona came round, followed by David Bean’s Beneteau 42.7 Trecento.

Coming fast and wide came the very pretty new Len Griffins Dufour 40 4th Dimension, behind them, Whitsunday local Roger Down’s Farr 11.6 True Love was sailing around another Beneteau 42.7 Michael Roper’s Ropabull.

While in the racing division there are lots of boring white spinnakers, the cruising boats seem to be in competition. The best spinnaker was probably on John and Chris Gardiner’s Sorcerer, but the yellow, green and red spinnaker on John and Kim Clinton’s Holy Cow looked good too.

Provisional results place the Farr 11.6 True Love, who finished six minutes ahead of Marisa, as the winner of today's shortened race(19.3 nm) on handicap from Marisa and Ivor Burgess' Still Dangerous.
