Esprit leads Premier Cruising at Hogs Breath

by Rob Kothe on 16 Aug 2005
Esprit Di Pearson
Sandringham sailor Garry Anderson, a Hogs Breath Race week regular on Bullistic in years gone by, is back for his second year on his Beneteau 47.7 Esprit and today he scored the second Premier Cruising division win in a row to comfortably lead the series.

The 29 nautical mile White Rock Race started in the 12 knot and building breeze. Esprit port tacked the start and followed Dr. Ian Nicholson’s Dubois 80 Intrigue and Don Algie’s Warwick 66 Storm 2 across Pioneer Bay. He was well ahead of the rest of the fleet on handicap as they sailed into the Molle Channel.

Anderson was pleased with his race ‘’It was a perfect day on the water. The start won us the race, we held out Dean Coates Pacific 50 Magic Carpet, round White Rock and they only got us under spinnaker on the way back up the Channel.’

There was a solid scrap going on back in ranks with Te Manawa the Beneteau 44.7 sailed by Royal Port Nicholson’s Rik Hart holding out Bob Robertson’s Bavaria Match 42 Monkey Magic, ahead of Bo Wharton’s 44.7 Mango Madness.

Robbo was sporting a big grin as he stepped ashore. ‘ It just does not get any better, blue water, wind, whales… you would not be anywhere else . There was great breeze today, for the last few races the wind has been softening later in the day, so as the smallest boat in the division we've been suffering, but not today’.
