Travemuende Woche. Day 6- Int 14's & Contenders

British sailors dominate the Int.14 Europeans and von der Bank (GER) leads Contender Worlds by 10 points over Bonezzi (ITA)

The Contender World Championships saw a strong Thursday (28 July) for German Jan von der Bank at the 116th Travemuende Week. The 38 years old scored a bullet and a third place into a clear lead by ten points over title defender Andrea Bonezzi from Italy. The British teams still dominate the INT.14 class European Championships in Travemuende. They occupied the first seven ranks with Alister Richardson and Ian Walker at the top.
‘I still can’t believe what is happening out there’, said the totally satisfied von der Bank. ‘A start at the boat end, hit the right corner, and then be in front.’.

Based in Kiel, Jan von der Bank won Kiel Week this year although he missed out a lot of training. ‘I’ve spent last year cruising with my family’, said the father of one child, ‘but in light conditions I can still keep up with the others.’

Major competitor on the final day will probably be Marcus Hamilton although the Australian is only sixth overall for the moment. He got an arbitration 20 percent penalty late at night of the first day after an infringement (rule 44.3) with John Browett from Great Britain. With a 27th place in the opening race Hamilton has two big discards which he would get rid of after eight races. But the forecast is light again for Friday in Travemuende.

‘I like to sail and so I hope to defend my lead on the water’, said Jan von der Bank.

‘GBR’ from one to seven – that’s how the overall ranking in the Int.14 class European Championships look like after day two. Richardson/Walker as the best of the best sailed two faultless races scoring two bullets. The duo from Bournemouth has a comfortable lead by five points over their closest rivals Archie Massey and George Nurton. The first non-British crew are the Germans Stephan Heim and Robert Schmidt (8th).
