Naga Cup 2005- Phuket posse to fight it out
by Guy Nowell on 20 Jul 2005
Next Saturday and Sunday will see the second running of the Naga Cup, the annual class championship of the Phuket Sports 8 class, and this year the opening event of Phuket Race Week.
First launched in 2003, the Phuket 8 is designed as a no-holds-barred sports boat, especially suited to the generally light airs of the Asian region, with basic accommodation suitable for overnight excursions.
The Naga Cup will be contested by the four existing boats and promises some exciting racing.
Odds-on favourite is Scott Duncanson – son of 8 designer John Duncanson – on Securicor Somtam Express. Mark Horwood’s Image Asia Attitude 8 will be chasing him all the way, as will Josh Lee’s Vino by Watermark.
Keith Moore and Pla Loma are familiar names at Asian racing venues, and the latest boat of that name is indeed a Phuket 8.
Last year’s event was conducted in 20+ knot breezes that had all the crews hanging on by their teeth – no doubt they are hoping for more of the same.
