Olivier de Kersauson’s giant trimaran Geronimo will round Maatsuyker Island; the southern most tip of Australia around nightfall today. The 34 metre (111 feet) multihull is now 150 miles west of Maatsuyker, sailing in easier wind conditions.
Over the last 24 hours the westerlies sweeping towards Tasmania have dropped in intensity from 40 knots to less than 20 knots and the Franco-Australian crew are gaining much needed rest.
Tonight Geronimo will have only the length of the Sydney to Hobart race to sail. Her theoretical ETA is now 10:45am on Saturday morning, but an earlier arrival is expected.
