Notice of Race online for Southport to Mackay race

by Georgie Brown on 22 Jun 2005
The Notice of Race for the 2005 Southport to Mackay Yacht Blue Water Race is now available via the Mackay Yacht Club’s web site.

The 530 nautical mile Category 2 coastal race begins from Southport, Qld on Friday August 5 at 1100hrs. Divisions include IRC, PHRF and Cruising.

The race is hosted by the Mackay Yacht Club, in association with the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.

The CYCA is assisting for the second year running and will handle entry documentation and processing, and will offer professional assistance in issues such as handicapping, radio skeds, protests and briefings.

Now in its third year, the race provides a natural transit between the Sydney-Gold Coast Yacht Race, hosted by the CYCA, and the well established Hog’s Breath Race Week at Airlie Beach and the Hahn Premium Hamilton Island Race Week.

Line honours for the first race in 2003 was taken by the 83-ft maxi, Nicorette, in a cracking 42 hours.

This benchmark still stands. Last year’s line honours winner, the Volvo 60 Andrew Short Marine, was beset by challenging wind shifts among the islands of the Capricorn Coast and lower Whitsundays and crossed the finish line in just over 60 hours.

Briefings will be held in association with the Southport Yacht Club, which will also assist with the start.
