Jelik steamrolls fleet

For the second race in a row, Frank Pong’s 76 footer Jelik sailed away from the 2005 Koh Samui race fleet in strong conditions.

After a postponement, the breeze kicked in and racing began at 11.56 am.

The Hong Kong entry Jelik won the start convincingly and led at the windward mark from Ffree Fire and Ulumulu. At every corner in the three legs of the windward leeward race she extended her lead.

Frank Pong enjoyed today’s racing. ‘Good conditions for us today. The wind reached 14 knots at one stage. It was very consistent, from 210-220. Perfect conditions for us.

‘Ulumulu is blisteringly fast in very light conditions but they tend to struggle a little when the wind gets up.'

Bill Bremmer's Sydney 36 Foxy Lady comfortably lead the IRC Division 2 fleet, and at the first mark some smart spinnaker work helped them increase their lead on Happy Endings.

Foreign Exchange 2 lost ground on the leaders after suffering a slow kite drop. Magic Roundabout, Buzz 8, Pink Pussy Cat and Image Asia rounded shortly there after.

As Bremmer explained post race, 'We committed to the right and found the shift we needed. Andy McPhail (from Mainstay Marine in Sydney) was calling the laylines perfectly and we were fast around the course.'

In the multihull division Cedar Swan was the clear leader throughout the day with the Coco sponsored boats, the twin masted Coco Blue and Coco China House, battling it out.

There were a few minutes of unplanned entertainment as a local fishing boat proceeded to pull up its nets, which were cast very close to the leeward mark.

As luck would have it, no racing yachts were at the mark at that particular time and any major interference to the race was avoided.
