Hot new 79er from Down Under

by Event Media on 8 Feb 2005
The space age 79er Bethwaite Design
Hot news is the new joint venture project between Sydney Yachting Centre and Bethwaite Design to produce the new 79er, in short, a high performance canting keel sports boat which is set to thrill the toughest of our speed seeking yachties.

Julian Bethwaite, from Bethwaite design, famous for producing the 49er Olympic class and 29er international class, has developed the 79er in conjunction with his design partner Martin Billoch.

It is a development of their current 8metre sports boat ‘Vivace’. Vivace has dominated the Australian sports boat scene since her launching and is owned by French Americas Cup sailor Pierre Gal, who was heavily involved in the design of his prototype and will also be involved in rig and sail development for the new 79er.

Tooling and moulds will be produced by Sydney Yachting Centres manufacturing arm ‘Northshore Yachts’ located on Sydney’s Central coast.

Heading up the new project is the experienced Jason Rowed, a boat builder in his on right as well as an experienced sailor who has been part of winning teams such as the current Mumm 30 world champion Foreign Affair.

Rowed will be in consultation with Julian Bethwaite and the pair will be responsible for setting up the worldwide network of sales outlets for the 79er.

With orders already confirmed both here in Australia and internationally the 79er is set to take off in a big way.
