Atomic blasts on Sydney Harbour

Atomic, probably the fastest 50-footer afloat caused a lot of heartache on Sydney Harbour over the last eighteen months. Now she's on the market.

Built for well respected yacht owner and racer Denis O’Neil, Atomic is a Murray Burns Dovell designed canting ballast racer that has demonstrated the benefits of the latest technology for inshore racing.

Racing regularly in the twilight series and special events like the Cannon Big boat series the boat built by Sydney Yachts has beaten such boats as Brindabella, AAPT and the Volvo 60’s at up to 30’ less in size and with a crew of just 8-12.

Denis O’Neil noted “Throughout my many boats I have never had such excitement on the Harbour as with this boat. To be going upwind at 9.5 knots and downwind at 20 knots chasing and passing boats 30’ bigger is a fantastic feeling.”

Martin Thompson of Sydney Yachts commented that this is the perfect inshore racer for an enthusiast keen to step straight to the front of the line honours race at a fraction of the cost and crew needs of a larger boat. It represents the latest in performance equipment from the boats construction through to its North’s Carbon 3DL sail inventory and is as new in every respect, maintained by a fastidious owner with the highest of standards.

Sale price is $950,000 and subject to agreeable terms.

While I've mostly heard this phrase applied to climbing, skiing, and mountaineering, four late-winter and springtime races on Puget Sound this year exemplified the fact that this line.

The appeal of offshore
Is there still appeal? Have we made it too onerous? Why would someone take it up now? I had been pondering. Yes. Marquee events have no issue attracting entrants. Middle Sea, Transpac, Cape to Rio, Fastnet, and Hobart all spring to mind instantly, but what of the ‘lesser' races? Lots of boats in pens (slips) a lot of the time
