Australian Youth Championships Day Three

by Sarah Robson on 10 Jan 2005
It was another entertaining day of testing conditions and close competition for the 194 sailors in the 2005 Australian Youth Championships.

Racing began under cloudy skies with a 10-knot southeasterly breeze that oscillated and moved right throughout the day. The pressure was shiftier today, keeping the sailors searching for the channels and gusts.

The battle between Evan Walker and Kyle Langford, and Taylor Booth and Bridget Waterhouse continued today in the Hobie 16’s.

It was a good day for Walker and Langford who worked the shore most of both races and made impressive ground downwind staying with the shifts gaining them two first places and placing them seven points ahead overall.

It was an unlucky day for Booth and Waterhouse who described today as “shifty and horrible” and were plagued by spinnaker pole problems after a breakage in the first race; finishing second and fifth they are hoping for better luck tomorrow when a second drop may come into play.

In the Laser Radial fleet Jye Murray has taken the lead with a first and a second place today, former leader James Burman scored a first in Race 6 but retired from Race 7.

In the Girls fleet Victoria’s Samantha England further consolidated her lead with another two wins today and is now ahead by 12 points from NSW’s Megan Andrew.

Singapore sailor Maximilian Soh leads the Laser Full Rig fleet taking first and sixth today, followed by Victoria’s Warwick Hill who was placed first in Race 6.

Racing in the 420’s has been close and aggressive; there was a general recall in the second race followed by a black flag.

Tasmania’s Emma and Stephanie Flukes had a great second race, going far right from the start on a one tack beat giving them an impressive lead which they consolidated on each upwind beat to finish first in the combined boys and girls fleet; they are in second place overall behind Dawn Xiaodan Liu and Siobhan Shui Wun Tam of Singapore.

In the boys 420’s Craig Souter and Joshua Roberts have a seven point lead scoring two second places today; they found the conditions tough tactically in such a competitive fleet saying, “It was harder to defend when out in front so the lead changed constantly”.

Corey Plant had another outstanding day in the Mistrals working his way quickly around the course to win another two races, he leaves the regatta today for Sail Melbourne with a six point lead.

Some of today’s closest racing was in the 29ers; Will Critharis and Ryan Jennings of NSW have held onto their lead, stealing first place from Mathew Vandervoot and Joshua Cornford two gybes before the pin in Race 6.

Critharis described today’s racing as “the most mentally difficult so far”.

Regatta Coach and 470 Olympian, Belinda Stowell observed that all the fleets have improved dramatically over the nationals and this championship, with gaps closing between the leaders and the pack.

Racing will conclude tomorrow with Races 8 & 9 starting at 12.30.
