Australian venue announced for 2019 WASZP Games

WASZP Games Martina Orsini
WASZP is very pleased to announce that the 2019 WASZP Games are heading down under. After an extensive search we have identified our destination of Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

The dates of 22-28th of January will forecast the classic ‘Fremantle Doctor’ which routinely pumps in on summer afternoons at 18-22 knots. This will lead to a sensational spectacle of speed and colour by the WASZP class.

The key areas WASZP wanted to address in the search for an appropriate venue are, world class race track, fun, social activities and favourable wind. RFBYC ticked all the boxes!

The race management team understands that the WASZP class needs to explore alternative racing formats such as Slalom and GPS racing. The Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club venue is the perfect location for both spectators and sailors. Perched high above Freshwater Bay, the clubhouse will allow for exciting stadium style racing while the open expanses of Melville Water on the Swan River provide an ideal location for an International Championship to be conducted.

Located in Peppermint Grove, RFBYC is flanked by river and sea and nestled about halfway between Fremantle and the City. Paired with the world famous Cottesloe beach close by, it is the idyllic place for visitors to experience Western Australia’s capital city.

With Western Australia now starting to establish a fleet of this new and exciting class it seemed the perfect time to head to Perth to unleash the WASZP on the city’s fabulous sailing conditions, flat water with hot summer sea breezes. Australia now has around 60 boats and it is envisaged that over 100 WASZP’s will be sailing around the country by January 2019.

Around 500 boats have now been delivered around the world, an excellent achievement at only 14 months after production began. It is anticipated that containers of boats from the UK, Europe, USA and New Zealand will join the Aussie teams culminating in a fleet of well over 100.

Following on from the initial success of the inaugural WASZP Games on Lake Garda Italy. The class has really kicked off with a fantastic beach culture, social scene and great racing across different formats in 30 different countries. WASZP is very keen to keep pushing these key areas of the class. We want people to have fun when they go to a regatta, more than that we want people to bring friends and family to enjoy the event as well. We are an all-inclusive class and what better place than Perth to showcase this.
