Top of the Bay Keelboat Regatta

by Event Media on 21 Dec 2004
The Royal Brighton Yacht Club will host the inaugural Top of the Bay Keelboat Regatta on Port Phillip over the Labour Day long weekend, March 11 to 14, 2005.

This new regatta will be open to yachts from all clubs around Australia. Yachts will be accommodated in the new RBYC marina, which can cater for over 60 visiting yachts.

Racing will be programmed for all divisions from Division 1 through to non-spinnaker cruisers and Sydney 38’s with an interclub team event.

Commodore David Atkinson says; 'We feel that there is a gap in the regatta program on Port Phillip following the hugely successful Skandia Geelong Week and we want to provide another opportunity for sailors to compete and socialise in a friendly and competitive atmosphere.’

The RBYC is one of Australia’s premier yacht clubs, which was established at Middle Brighton in August 1875. The Club now boasts 1200 members including yachting personalities John Bertrand AM, Mark Turnbull AM, Sarah Blanck and John Savage to name a few.

The new regatta will also be a community event linked to the new Bayside Council Festival at nearby Green Point providing an opportunity for the general public to join with the yachting community in a festival on the water

It will be a weekend full of activities not only for RBYC members and visiting yachties but also for the Bayside community.

Local residents will be encouraged to try their hand at sailing.

The club and its new state of the art marina will be open to the public. An opportunity to view the yachts as well as meet and talk to crew members over a drink and nibbles.

A family day is planned for the Saturday with lots of activities for both young and old on the marina and on the hardstand.
