Sydney International Regatta final day
by Event/Sail-World on 21 Dec 2004
Another successful year as the Yachting NSW organised Sydney International Regatta finished yesterday with the 196 boat fleet sailing in a south- east breeze which was patchy and peaked at 20 knots on Sydney Harbour.
Sailors from Great Britain, USA, Singapore, Sweden, New Zealand, Canada, Chile, Finland, Malaysia, Czech Republic and Australia took part in the annual dinghy regatta with many of the competitors using SIRs as training prior to state and national Championships.
Looking good for his next Olympic campaign, Queenslander Brendan Casey (AUS) won the ISAF Grade One Laser class from Michael Bullot (NZL). Athens Laser competitors Roope Suomalainen (FIN) completed the trio just one point behind Bultot.
In the Laser Radial fleet, Zac Skulander (AUS) finished first overall, with exceptional Laser Radial Womens world champion Krystal Weir (AUS) finishing second on a count back, finishing the regatta on equal points with Skulander.
Steven Todd (AUS) finished third. Weir finished a clear 28 points in front of her nearest rival, sixth placed Samantha Boyd (AUS).
Two time Olympian, Anthony ‘Nocka’ Nossiter (AUS) won the Finn class easily from Olympic hopeful Josh Beaver (AUS), with Jim Turner (GBR) third.
Tornado Olympic medallist and world champion, Darren Bundock, with crew Aaron Worrall (AUS) easily won the Tornado class from Robbie Lovig/Glen Douglas (AUS) and Greg Wyers/David Hart (AUS).
Mathew Belcher/Nick Behrens (AUS), looking to the Beijing Olympics, had a huge win in the 470 double handed dinghy.
Four wins in the seven race one drop series clinched the win, the Victorian crew of Tom Chisholm/Jon Newman (AUS) second placed but 17 points behind the winners.
One point behind them came the 420 Womens world champions, West Australia’s Elise Rechichi/Tessa Parkinson (AUS), their Olympic aspirations looking solid, having made light work of switching classes.
Emmett Lazich/Jukka Pirainen (AUS) made easy work of 49er results, finishing 11 points clear of the 49er designer Julian Bethwaite/Tai Elliot (AUS) second and Scott Kennedy/Chris Kitchen (NZL) third. Nathan Outteridge/Malcolm Page (AUS) did well in their first 49er regatta to finish fourth overall, just two points in arrears of third place.
The next event in the Downunder series is the ISAF Grade 1, Sail Melbourne, starting February 28th.
