Maserati sponsors maxi in Rolex Sydney Hobart

by Dana Edwards on 10 Dec 2004
Maserati Australia is pleased to announce their sponsorship of maxi yacht Infinity III, with the first big event being this years Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Infinity III, formerly know as Brindabella, and previous winner of the race on both line honors and handicap is owned by CYCA Commodore Martin James. James is a regular competitor with the Farr 65, now called Maserati.

This year however, official duties will keep James from participating in the race personally; however his crew will still head south. The crew on Maserati has between them over 95 years experience in Sydney Hobart races and will be sure to be in the lead group. Skipper Ian ‘Bugsy’ Potter, a leading navigator, will be sailing his 27th Sydney to Hobart.

‘We are delighted to have the opportunity to compete in the Rolex Sydney Hobart, which is recognised as a major international sporting event’, said Herbert Appleroth, General Manager, Maserati Australia.

‘This is a very exciting year for the race which celebrates its 60th Anniversary. Likewise, we at Maserati understand the importance of heritage, as we celebrate our 90th Anniversary this year as well’, he added.

From it’s foundation in 1914, Maserati has had a clear link with the sea, as the famous trademark of the Trident was taken from the staff of King Neptune. Nowadays, Maserati and its loyal owners share many common traits with yachting. The sport is challenging, requires the display of great teamwork, uses the very latest technologies so as to gain advantage over its competitors, and is intrinsically competitive.

Maserati will have 18 crew on board for the 628 nautical mile race south and will be a spectacular sight to see on Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day morning with her Spinnaker displaying the Maserati Trident and her bronze hull glistening over Sydney Harbour.
