by IBI Magazine on 20 Oct 2004
Robert Avis, a professional radar instructor, has developed a wireless radar simulator that is specifically designed for teaching navigational skills to prospective yachtsmen.
The new portable equipment offers a variety of exercise areas with realistic shipping contacts to exercise and perfect one's reactions to shipping scenarios in poor visibility.

It is a completely wireless system, meaning that training courses can take place from any location, such as yacht clubs, sailing schools or Avis's own purpose-designed classroom. It is based on a professional version used by the merchant navy.
Avis was recently made a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation for his contribution to the safety of navigation in pleasure and commercial yachting.
His one-day radar training course, which is fully endorsed by the UK's Royal Yachting Association (RYA), is now in its ninth year with more than 660 students having successfully completed it.
